new 2024a tire model
with the new vikingcontact 8, a new soft compound winter tire is now available, immediately replacing the previous model. the development focused on safe driving characteristics in harsh Nordic winters, increased comfort and lower rolling resistance, which is important for the growth of the number of electric cars in the Nordic markets. the new vikingcontact 8 is ideal for both conventional and electric cars, SUVs and hybrids.
for the tread design, our tire developers created the next level development of the highly successful predecessor model. it has already won first place in various professional press tests, proving its high performance. the directed tread pattern with symmetrical grooves quickly drives water and slush away from the contact point, while the gripping edges of the blocks firmly penetrate the winter road surface. it allows braking and acceleration forces to be transferred safely even on snowy and icy surfaces. when cornering on wet and dry roads, the tire's 3D sipes and bridges between individual blocks stabilize the tread, keeping it open for quick water drainage, which contributes to precise handling.
in addition to the grip edges of the tread blocks, the lamellae - small incisions in the blocks - are the best guarantee of high grip on winter roads. for the new vikingcontact 8, our engineers have developed a 3-layer sipe - a combination of straight, zigzag and wavy sipes, arranged one behind the other on the tire's shoulders in tread blocks. a straight lamella on the outside of the block stabilizes it to ensure good handling on dry roads. zigzag sipes form a wavy transition to typical winter tire sipes, ensuring smooth power distribution and better grip even on wet roads. the classic wave sipes have been developed with maximum edge length to ensure maximum snow grip even on the smallest surfaces - true to the motto of winter tire developers that maximum edge length results in maximum snow grip.
our continental chemists chose a new compound for the tread compound that allows for maximum flexibility even at the lowest temperatures. this is one of the basic prerequisites for firm grip and high grip on snow and ice. combined with the new tread design, this reduces tire deformation, in turn reducing energy loss on the road, ultimately reducing rolling resistance. in addition, the tire construction is based on our latest research results. the main body of the tire and its inner liner are made of materials that reduce internal friction between tire components, further contributing to reduced rolling resistance. the combination of these features reduces the fuel consumption of cars with a conventional engine and increases the driving range of electric cars.
new tread design with lateral grooves, contact patch and elastic tire compound significantly reduces tire-related road noise. this leads to greater driving comfort and less noise in the environment. passengers in electric vehicles in particular benefit from this, as tire noise is generally perceived much more strongly due to the absence of engine noise. the significant noise reduction of the new vikingcontact 8 compared to the previous model is clearly visible on its highest level a rated el tire label. in terms of rolling resistance, the vikingcontact 8, depending on the size, receives the value a or b of the el label, and the value d for braking distance on wet roads. in addition, it carries an ice symbol on the el label for its safe driving characteristics in the northern winter.
- the tread design and compound are adapted for harsh Nordic winters
- quieter and more comfortable driving experience
- low rolling resistance for low energy consumption
